Thursday October 29
October 27th, 2009 by KenFirst, thanks everyone who participated in the Big Read Art show. There was a good turnout, and everyone seemed impressed with all of the talent in our community.
I have to leave town Wednesday, and will not be able to moderate our monthly critique on our normal date and time, so let’s reschedule for Thursday, October 27 at 6pm.
This will also be a good opportunity to have the building open to the public so that anyone who missed the reception can still see the art show. Can someone let the teachers and students know that the building will be open until 7pmon thursday.
Betsy Baltzer has offered to be in the building for the Kentucky Arts Council Arts District Group’s visit and until critique. (1-6pm) If anyone else can be there, it would make it easier on her.
If you have not been to one of our critiques, Thursday will be a good time to start. Once a month, our local artists meet up to share and talk about their latest work. You don’t have to bring anything to enjoy the conversation. As an artist, I have found these meet ups a good opportunity to get advice on new work.
Please use the blog to leave a comment or ask a question about Thursday.

Ken,
Mollie and I are both planning on throwing Thursday and will be at the Guild. We are planning on being there late morning and the afternoon. I thought the show last night was great and appreciate all the work you all put in to make it so professional. I am going out of town early Friday morning, but have a piece I would like to get some help on and might be able to make the critique. Have a safe journey during your travels.
I will make sure Stephanie and Cindy Smalley (Manchester kids) get the message. Hope to make it Thursday. Mike needs to come hang pictures on my walls. I also like the idea of changing the name of the building to the John Van Meter Arts Center. That will be on next meetings agenda won’t it? Delbert can make us a nice sign. Also, he has a kiln he is willing to donate to the guild. There needs to be some discussion about that, as I have no idea protocol. Have a safe trip, and I hope Mike has a good visit with his aunt. You did a good job on The Big Read everyone.
I have been trying to think of new ways to reach out to the community. I think as far as marketing goes, the words “community art center”. Give The average person a very clear message of what we offer. I worry that the word “guild” might imply a certain exclusive quality, when in fact, our group welcomes everyone. Of course, we can’t change the guild’s name since we are a nonprofit, but we can choose which words to emphasize in our signs/marketing etc. I agree there is a great opportunity to honor John Van Meter, and would like to talk more about this when we meet next.
Dana, I talked to Claudia, and the group are coming at 2 pm, hopefully you, Toby, Mollie, Betsy and the other potters will be there and represent us well. I hope you make it for critique, it’s growing into a really cool activity, and has been a big help for my personal work.
Ken, your idea of community art center speaks well of the impression I have had of the organization. The group is welcoming, active and inclusive, unlike others I have been involved in. Go for it. And let me know if I can help with marketing ideas in the future. I want to live closer to Maysville! What a wonderfully talented group. See you at the next still life painting on November 11th.I will pick up my scary art at that time. Best, Mary Louise
