A Good Opportunity

March 28th, 2010 by Toby

We have a chance at a really good opportunity to open up another venue for potters and people who want to try their hand at something new and wonderful! The pottery studio has been given use of a really nice slab roller. It is on loan, and I think we can keep it as long as we care for it properly. Free! We also have the chance, at a very reasonable price to purchase a used, but top of the line, clay extruder. This will be great for anyone wanting to try some handbuilding sculptural work! Both machines are easy to use once you see how they work. And, no electrical parts! The slab roller is a done deal. My only suggestion is either we supply our own canvas as it is an expendable part of this.  I was told the extruder had to be voted on by the board. I have no idea who the board is, other than I know Jo was appointed at the last meeting by Claudia, so I assume Claudia is on it too. Anyhow, if you know who ison the board and are interested, please tell them this is a good idea!

Would anyone know where the banding wheel is? I brought it up from the basement to use in the pottery “wing” as it was drier and warmer. My other tools are there, but the wheel has disappeared.

Kiln Issues

February 21st, 2010 by Toby

I just came back from the guild. For one thing, it is cold and the furnace seems to not be working again. The kiln front piece is back on, so it may be fixed. I did not plug it in to check until I hear from Jim. I did notice the trigger stays in place even without a cone. This won’t work, as nothing will cut the kiln off when it reaches temp. So do not use it yet, potters.

Frontier Christmas Set-up/ Dec. 1st Noon

November 19th, 2009 by bsorrell@windstream.net
I will be at the guild on Tuesday, December 1st, about noon, to decorate for Frontier Christmas and start getting setup.  This is the date that we had talked about before.  Could use some help from all of those that plan on showing their work.  We will also need some refreshments for Saturday and Sunday.  I will put a signup list on the table by the coffee pot tomorrow for those that plan to help set up and bring food.  Toby has also offered to put out signs in some places and needs some help with that.  Please , if you plan on participating chip in…many hands make light work. If you are not planning on participating we could still use extra hands with the other things. I will be at the guild tomorrow about 10:00 until at least noon.  My cell is 606.782.3348

Rotary Club Fund Raiser & ORVAG Art Show

November 19th, 2009 by bsorrell@windstream.net
The Rotary club will be holding their anual Fund Raiser, Purses for Purpose, on Friday, December 4th from 10a.m.-8:00p.m. and would like for guild members to be included if they would like.  There are a couple of things to consider before saying yes.  They are wanting 30-40 pieces total, so each would be bringing only a few.  There will be representatives from ORVAG there during the entire time, so we would divide up the time (10-8) between those wanting to participate, and 10% of sales will be donated to the Rotary club.  We will be able to set up a day or so before, if you wish, and Doug Hendrickson will be able to help with tables.  We will need to breakdown after 8.  The Christmas parade will take place around 6:00 that evening.  If you are interested in participating please let me know by sending an email or calling (606.782.3348) asap.   This would be a great place to have your work shown in Maysville and be a part of the big fund raiser for the Rotary Club.  I realize that Frontier Christmas is the next day and this is a busy time for everyone.    Please sign up at the Guild for Frontier Christmas or let me, know if you are planning on participating.
Thank you,
Dana Sorrell

Claudia or Ken when and where can I pick up some cards? Sam says he will put together a piece for the paper. Should I try to get in whenever I can or do you want to see it first. Perhaps I can e-mail a copy to be shared, let me know.

October 20th, 2009 by Toby

I just wanted to remind everyone to bring a piece to show before next Monday evening. Alaso, a few volunteers are needed to come by the guild tomorrow after lunch and hang the kid’s and a few adults artwork. Some really different things. I like the eyes….Congratulations to  Ryan and Bridgett and new baby.

set up for art auction

September 29th, 2009 by Ruvonna

Thanks to Donna for forwarding my e-mail I have had a good response so far folks have offered 15 tables and dozens of candle holders. We still need more tables, I am calling friends to see how many I can round up. I will bring the material to the next meeting to measure and cut. I may have to stash the tables in the basement until after the big read reception, but I think I can get the table cloths measured and cut the day of our board meeting. I may ask for a little help himing.

Another success!

I think we need to congratulate ourselves on another impressive show. Ignoring the rain and the broken horsehair piece in the window, I think it was a successful event, and we should be proud of what we showed the people who entered our . I also think we need to thank those who made it all work. I know I will leave someone out as I do not know everything people did, but I hope you will add to this to make it complete. Thanks to:

  •  Sue for making 2 great signs even though you were not able to attend
  • Mike for hauling tubs, getting balloons, placing signs,  general organizer, kibbutzer, staying late with us and tracking down Debbie, who got Suzie, who got Duff so we could all finally go home
  • Jo and Mollie for pizza…that hit the spot
  • Russell for bringing dinner Friday
  • Ken for placing people when they showed up Thursday and getting panels for the visual artists, and a lot more I am sure
  • Bill and Char for watching my spot numerous times for me.
  • the city of Maysville for a nice, dry venue and their preparation in having it ready for us

I just wish Marjorie could have been a part of it.
